The name ‘Raksha Bandhan’ means ‘a bond of security’. The festival falls on the Shravan Purnima which comes generally in the month of August. Sisters tie the silk thread called Rakhi on their brother’s wrist and pray for their well being and brothers promise to take care of their sisters and promise them to protect from all harms and troubles in turn sisters pray to God to protect their brother from all evil.
Shravana Purnima
Shravana Purnima, the day to celebrate Raksha Bandhan begins with performing puja after going through morning chores and taking bath by all the family members. Womenfolk decorate puja thali made of copper or steel and the holy sign of swastika is drawn with roli on it which constitutes an important part of the Rakhi puja. The items required for the Rakhi thali are, roli, rice mixture, flowers, Rakhi, diya and Rakhi sweets. Deity Lakshmi tied a rakhi onto the wrist of King Bali thus making him Her brother and who in turn liberated Lord Narayan i.e. Vishnu. That day as per the Hindu lunar calendar was ‘Shravan Purnima’.
Mantra for Raksha Bandhan :
Yena baddho balee raajaa daanavendro mahaabalah; Tena twaam anubadhnaami rakshey maa chala maa chala
Meaning- “I am tying on your hand this Raksha, with which the most powerful and generous King Bali himself was bound; O Raksha, don’t go away; don’t go away.”
Significance of Sawan Purnima Puja
Sawan Purnima or Raksha Bandhan is now considered as a day to celebrate the sacred relation of a brother and a sister, but the Vedic scriptures show the Rishis tied rakhi to the people who came seeking their blessings. The sages tied the sacred thread to themselves to safeguard them from the evil. It is, by all means, the ‘Pap Todak, Punya Pradayak Parva’ or the day that bestows boons and end all sins. wherein rakhi denotes a raksha or protection. It could also be tied by wife, a daughter or mother or anyone else to seek protection. However, on rakshaa bandhan it is the emotions that are important. The rakshaa bandhan ceremony performed is the symbolic everlasting bond between brothers and sisters that reinforce ties between them even across continents, and it is the one which has the most importance on this auspicious day and both should pray for strength to protect the nation and Religion.
