Goddess Chinnamasta maintains the fifth significant position among all the ten Das Mahavidya’s. Chhinnamasta “She whose head is severed”, often spelled Chinnamasta and also called Chhinnamastika or Prachanda Chandika. She is one of the ten Tantric goddesses and an aspect of tantra Devi marked by extreme and violent energy. The self-beheaded goddess holds her own severed head in one hand, a stout sword with a curved blade and thick back in another. Three jets of blood gush forth in a sudden stream out of her bleeding neck and are drunk by her severed head and two attendants known as Dakini and Varnani. Chinnamasta is usually represented graphically by sketch standing on a copulating couple. She symbolizes both aspects of Devi: a life-giver and a life-taker.
