Diwali Puja and Rituals

Diwali puja and rituals consist of religious ceremonies with 5 days puja as a whole, in which main diwali puja of ganesh-lakshmi is carried out on the third day. The festival actually runs for five days, beginning with Dhanteras, Narak Chaturdasi- Choti diwali, Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja, Bhai Duj although the main celebrations happen on the third day i.e. Lakshmi puja/Diwali. People celebrate each of these five days with true religious zeal. The peculiarity of this festival is its harmony of five varied philosophies, with each day to a specific thought which will elate and enrich the individual’s life.2

First day of Deepavali 2023- Dhanteras or Yamadeepdaan

The first day festival, Dhanteras, is also called as Dhantrayodashi or Dhanwantari Triodasi. It falls on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of kartik (October/November) and takes place two days before Diwali, in honor of Lord Dhanavantri, the physician of the gods and an incarnation of Vishnu. Dhan means “wealth” and on this day, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped for a contented state of being happy, healthy and prosperous. The Day of Dhanteras is also known as the day of “YAMADEEPDAAN” and lamps are kept burning throughout the night in reverential adoration to Yam, the god of death. The rituals of Kali Choudas was originated much before the origin of diwali as a puja to kuldevi of the individual families, villagers, as the local goddess to whom the people carried out their puja rituals and offered prasadam in order to protect themselves from evil spirits. Some families also offer food to their forefathers on this day. House is lit with oil lamps during the evening. The Third Day of Deepavali Rituals- Laxmi Ganesh Puja

This is the most important day of the five-day celebrations. Deepavali puja is a worship and praise of Mahalakshmi and Lord Ganesha. We show respect towards Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity and worshipping Lord Ganesha during the festival will remove all obstacles and bring Good luck with Prosperity to the family. During the tradition of Diwali Puja, special offerings are paid to Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, the Nine Planets to seek blessings and good fortune for all family members. Lakshmi is the goddess of light, beauty, good fortune, and wealth. While Laxmi is generally worshiped to achieve success, she does not reside with anyone who is disinclined to work and wish her only as wealth. Ganesh pooja plays prime importance on this auspicious occasion of Diwali as he is to be worshiped in all pujas before any other god or goddess. Ganesh shares the altar with mata Lakshmi. Shri Ganesh is considered as the god of good commencements and the eradicator of obstacles.

Deepavali Puja is a collective puja of five deities: Ganesha is worshiped at the beginning; Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped in her three forms – Mahalakshmi (the goddess of wealth and money), Mahasaraswati (the goddess of learning), and Mahakali(protector and remover of evil elements); Kubera (the treasurer of the gods).
